Vols Leave Badgers Outback

Erik Ainge completed 25 of 43 passes for 365 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 16 Tennessee to a 21-17 win over  No. 18 Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl in Tampa.

In his final game as a Vol, Ainge walked away with the Most Valuable Player Award.

Tennessee ends the season with a 10-4 record. The Vols lost two of their first three games before winning eight of their next nine and losing to LSU in the SEC title tilt. It was the first 10-win season for the Vols since 2004.

Tennessee defensive back Antonio Wardlow picked off a Tyler Donovan pass at the Vols’ goal in the final moments to give the Big Orange the win.

The Tennessee defense made life tough on the Wisconsin quarterback by delivering a highlight package of big hits.

Wisconsin ends the season 9-4.

The Vols played without six players who were declared academically ineligible, including defensive tackle Demonte Bolden, linebacker Rico McCoy and leading receiver Lucas Taylor.

Josh Briscoe was the Vols leading receiver with seven catches for 101 yards.

Tennessee improves to 10-4 on the year. Wisconsin falls to 9-4. This is UT’s 20th 10-win season.

Today marked Tennessee’s 47th all-time bowl appearance—second-most nationally. The Vols rank among the top five nationally with 25 bowl wins.

Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer’s record now stands at 147-45 (.766) in 16 seasons with the Vols. He has led UT to 15 bowl appearances and nine 10-win seasons. Fulmer owns an 8-7 career record in bowl games. His eight bowl victories are more than any coach in UT history (Johnny Majors was 7-4 in bowls from 1977-92). Fulmer is 52-13 (.800) against non-conference opposition.

Ainge finishes his career with a 27-10 record as a starter, including a 1-2 mark at neutral sites.
